Improving water management
Water management in Bangladesh has been strengthened by giving all parties involved, operating at different levels (from local to national), the support they need.
Due to its low position in relation to sea level, Bangladesh is under continuous threat of the sea and the main rivers that cross the land. Dikes, drainage channels and locks are supposed to protect the citizens against waterlogging of the fields.
Since 1975, the Netherlands has been supporting water management in Bangladesh as part of an intensive bilateral relationship between the two countries, which show many similarities in position and water issues. The cooperation has resulted in projects where the local population plays an important role.
From November 2003 till November 2008, Euroconsult Mott MacDonald carried out a programme to improve water management in Bangladesh on different levels. Studies show that water management often works well on project level, but is not always well embedded on other levels.
In this programme, Euroconsult Mott MacDonald supported water management in two regions in Bangladesh extensively, with the local population closely involved in the process. The procedure that was followed in this project is now being integrated in the standard operating procedure of the BWDB, the Bangladesh Water Development Board.
