Plan and design of extensive land reclamation project
On a new island in the Atlantic Ocean a completely new city will arise, Eko Atlantic City. A remarkable example of Dutch engineering craftsmanship.
An extensive, innovative land reclamation project is taking place off the coast of Lagos, the capital of Nigeria. A new island of about 900 hectare is being created in the Atlantic Ocean. The new city will become home to at least 400,000 residents and be able to accommodate 200,000 commuters daily.
The motives behind this expansion into the sea: lack of space for new economic and urban development, and the enormous traffic problems that Lagos struggles with. At the same time, the strong erosion of the coastline needs to be halted.
Royal Haskoning is responsible for the Master plan and the design of the new city. Furthermore, a public-private partnership (South Energyx Nigeria Ltd.) has commissioned the consulting engineers to design a new sea wall and the Urban and Transport Master plan. On top of that, Royal Haskoning is responsible for the environmental impact assessment. This project is been supported by the Lagos State Government.
By now, the Urban and Transport Master plan has been completed. The next phase of the project will start soon: the design of water, sewage, waste water and energy facilities, such as electricity, street lighting and telecommunications. The land reclamation is already in progress. The start of construction is planned for mid 2009.
