At this special time of the year, I would like to send seasonal and festive greetings to all members on behalf of the FIDIC president, board and all our staff. I hope that you take the opportunity to take a rest over the next two weeks and spend time with friends and family. The final quarter of 2018 has been a busy one for FIDIC, with a number of events and developments that will help to strengthen our organisation as we look ahead to an exciting year in 2019. We have, as ever, been active on the global stage. I was delighted to call for better collaboration to deliver successful projects at the influential World Bank Global Infrastructure Facility (GIF) meeting in October in Singapore and also to make the case for using FIDIC standard procurement contracts on PPP projects at the recent United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) meeting in Geneva. It is vitally important that FIDIC speaks out for the industry on key issues at such gatherings and this is something that we will continue in 2019. Our recent FIDIC Contract Users’ Conferences in Johannesburg and London were well attended and gave us much useful feedback that our newly strengthened contracts committee will put to good use in the months ahead. It was also great to see FIDIC’s directors and secretaries’ advisory council (D&SAC) continuing its excellent work in ensuring that we have a structured approach to engaging our 100+ member associations on the strategic direction and operational aspects of the federation. I look forward to working closely with the advisory council in 2019. Next year will see a number of strategic and operational challenges, including finalising our office location in Geneva and also deciding on how best we will organise the delivery of FIDIC’s commercial services. The FIDIC board has discussed these issues and our latest board update will bring members up to date on these plans to strengthen the federation. Those plans also include progressing with building and strengthening the FIDIC staff team to ensure that we are fit for future challenges and I hope to be able to give an update on this early in the new year. Elsewhere, I am pleased to report that discussions are ongoing with the World Bank and other Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) on their use of the 2017 FIDIC Contracts and we expect a significant announcement on this issue early in 2019. Watch this space. Once again, this is FIDIC working on behalf of the industry at the highest level and I am grateful to all those involved in our ongoing discussions and negotiations with an important international stakeholder. The staff team here is also hard at work planning our 2019 key events. These include our flagship annual FIDIC global infrastructure conference in Mexico, which we hope members will support strongly as they always do, and five contract users’ conferences around the world. All of these events give FIDIC a valuable opportunity to liaise with and involve key stakeholders in our work, which is so crucial in ensuring that we are an effective organisation on the world stage. Finally, I just wanted to thank all our member associations for your unstinting support during the year and also, on a personal note, for making me so welcome since my arrival as the new FIDIC chief executive in September. It has been an honour and a privilege to work on your behalf as part of such an important global industry sector. I look forward to receiving your support when we return after the festive break to start work in 2019 for what promises to be an exciting year for FIDIC, its member associations and the industry as a whole. Once again, I wish you seasonal greetings and my very best wishes for a happy and peaceful holiday. With best wishes, For and on behalf of FIDIC and its board Dr Nelson Ogunshakin OBE Chief Executive, FIDIC
